Steganography | Gaurav Parmar

The word "steganography" has a Greek origin and means "concealed writing". It is made up of two Greek words steganos (στεγανός) meaning "covered or protected" and graphei (γραφή) meaning "writing". Steganography can be considered as the science and art of hiding some information within other usual and practically harmless messages through embedding messages into them. It is concerned with replacing bits of useless/unused data inside general computer files like sound, text, graphics etc with bits of  invisible information. It is usually used with those files in which such kind of violation is not expected. It can also be sometimes used at the place of encryption. It is like the alternate for encryption.

Steganography can be done by the aid of special softwares. The major advantage of steganography over cryptography is that messages are not attractive. Steganography can be used for security purpose. It conceals information within computer files. The reason why media files are used for steganographic purpose is that they have larger size and are not suspicious.

Some examples of steganography can be-
       - Concealed messages in .exe files
       - Making text the same color as the background in emails, word processor documents, e-mails etc
